Six is the age when a doll stops being decoration and starts being a companion. She gets carried by one arm, dressed and undressed forty times, and her hair gets brushed until something gives. Buy accordingly.
Size
Fourteen to eighteen inches is the sweet spot. Big enough that clothes have real fasteners a child can work, small enough to carry around the house. Eighteen inches is the American Girl standard, which matters because the accessory market for that size is enormous and much of it is affordable.
Hair is where most dolls fail
- Rooted saran or kanekalon survives brushing. It is what the better play dolls use.
- Cheap fiber hair mats into felt within a month and never recovers.
- Wigged dolls are for collectors, not six-year-olds. The wig comes off, usually at the worst moment.
- Braids and updos look wonderful in the box and are gone within a day. Buy for how the hair behaves loose.
Body
A soft cloth torso with vinyl head and limbs takes drops far better than an all-hard-vinyl body, and it is nicer to sleep next to. Fully jointed collector bodies look impressive and break at the knees.
Clothes and eyes
- Velcro and snaps, not tiny buttons. A six-year-old who cannot dress the doll herself loses interest fast.
- Painted eyes are effectively indestructible. Sleep eyes — the kind that close when she lies down — delight children but can stick with age and rough handling. Both are fine choices; just know which you are buying.
What to skip at this age
- Porcelain and bisque. They are beautiful and they break, and the break is sharp.
- Anything with small removable accessories if younger siblings are in the house.
- Battery features. They are the first thing to fail and the first thing a child stops using.
What it costs
- $25–$40 — a good sturdy play doll with hair worth brushing
- $45–$75 — better hair, better clothes, a wardrobe you can build on
- $80–$130 — the American Girl tier, where the accessory world opens up
